Good for you, Shirley Sherrod
They tossed you out like garbage. Even
the Secretary's hug couldn't soothe the pain and you rejected his
offer for a job. There is a such thing as dignity
and you exemplified it by turning down that job. Kudos to you!

Linda Bates Parker
Some people come to this earth to make a difference. My friend and
colleague Linda Bates Parker was one such person. I hope that you
read her life story
at the Black Career Zone.com. Rest in peace, Linda.

Black people...let's be kind to one
another. Read Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Friere
(browse through the first chapter) and see why we engage in
such unkind acts. Let it go. There is a such a thing as Karma and today
it's taking no prisoners.

Shirley Sherrod?
Kudos to Ms. Sherrod who fought back to
restore her reputation. She is the wife of Charles Sherrod, a very
famous Civil Rights worker who was in the \
Student NonViolent Coordinating Committee. She fought back for all of
the people who have unfairly lost their jobs. As a Movement worker, she
knew just
what to do. Fight the assault with the media. Ms. Sherrod...on behalf of
all the little people who were fired and lost, you are our hero.

Green Jobs?
I have thought about green jobs. In analyzing them, I think it's
important to realize that many are for blue collar jobs. This is great
for those in that particular
sector. I do wonder about the rest of us. What about the customer
service reps, processors, etc.? Where are the green jobs for them? I
hope that green jobs
will be the answer to the plight of millions of
Americans without jobs. We have to wait and see. Don't get me wrong. We
have to save the environment and
our world. But we also have to save our people.

What happened?
Did the Black Baby
Boomers go down the road less traveled? My thoughts are the Baby
Boomers or those who most benefited from the 60s and 70s made a
critical choice that might have had some significant
impact on the Black community. This group opted for corporate
careers. Too few became entrepreneurs who were able to stand on
the shoulders of great Black businessmen such as S,B.
Fuller, the richest African American of his time. And who could
blame them? It was so tempting. It was the first
time that Blacks were allowed
to venture outside of teaching, social work, librarian and
menial labor careers. But thinking back, many in this group
could have started
businesses and built wealth for themselves
and their communities. I
strongly feel that the newer generation should start their own
businesses. I know that many of them want to become
entrepreneurs. I encourage them in those endeavors, particularly
in this job market.

What the
Black Web Awards Mean!

I was
considering what the Black Web Awards mean? From looking at the
years' previous winners and nominees, the Awards seem to have more
to do with helping site visitors than actual design. Who gives the
best information? Who best helps the Black community? I
remember that BCZ's sister site was a Finalist in the 2007 Black Web
Awards. I remember someone writing me and saying how much that
success-oriented site had helped them. And that's what it's all
about. We have to help each other. Each one give back.

College Grads Have
Difficulty Finding Jobs
Posted:

Only 19.7% of
2008 college grads found jobs, according to ABC News. Today, it's
increasingly difficult for students to get jobs. I know of some who
haven't worked in two or three years. That's not acceptable. College
grads will have to think about work in an entirely different way.
Why not start a business, for example, in college? Bill Gates did
it. The guys who started Facebook did it.

Today's job seeker may have to think about work
completely differently. As globalization continues to impact our world,
the 9-5 may soon be history.
